How It All Works

It all began when I purchased an HP Elitedesk with an Intel i5-9600

I picked this computer because it uses a 9th-generation Intel CPU that features Intel Quick Sync technology. This allows for the CPU to encode and decode most new media formats very quickly and efficiently. With a computer that is on 24/7, it is important to have a low-power draw.

I use this computer to run a program called Docker. Docker is an open-source platform that makes it easier to run applications by using containers. Containers are lightweight, portable environments that bundle an application with all its dependencies, so it runs consistently across different systems.

Within Docker, I have set up 11 various applications and services that allow me to run a media server called Plex, an Arrs stack (Radarr, Sonarr, Bazarr, and Prowlarr), a self-hosted website, and finally a reverse proxy that allows me to share all of this with the world!

Plex?

I’m sure many of you have heard me talk about my Plex server. I am very proud of the media collection I have gathered over the past 6 years (about 7TB of my favorite TV shows and movies). I have tried sharing my library previously, but with all my recent work, I want to try to share again and with more people!

For those of you that do not know about my Plex media server; it is a program that I run on a computer at home that keeps track of all the shows that I have downloaded and then makes them available to stream on just bout any device you can think of!

What is an Arrs Stack?

What has become colloquially known as an Arrs stack on the internet refers to a group of programs that when run alongside a Plex media server, allows for the automatic downloading and organization of requested media.

Radarr

Radarr monitors new releases or user-requested movies, finds them via indexers or torrent clients, downloads them via qBittorrent, and moves them to the appropriate library folder for Plex to scan and make available

Sonarr

Similar to Radarr but for TV series. Sonarr handles episode tracking, downloading via qBittorrent, and organizing.

Prowlarr

Acts as a unified download tracker, allowing for easier management of sources searched by Radarr and Sonarr when looking for files to download.

Bazarr

Tracks downloaded media and attempts to add matching subtitles

The Birth of Devon.wiki

Now that I have the media management down, the next step was to figure out how to share my hard work with my friends and family!

Overseerr

Overseerr is a user-friendly platform that lets you request content to be added to my Plex server. Once a request is made, Overseerr sends it along to Radarr or Sonarr

Wizarr

Wizarr simplifies the process of adding new users to my Plex server. By sharing a unique invite code, I can grant access to my libraries quickly and easily.

NGINX proxy manager

NPM runs locally, linking my services to my domain. It securely manages access, making locally hosted services publicly available.

WordPress

WordPress enables me to build this website using an intuitive graphical interface and versatile plugins, making it easy to create and customize.

NameCheap

This service manages my domain name and DNS, including dynamic DNS functionality, making it simple to self-host and keep everything running smoothly!
